Normalmente, como ustedes saben, yo dedico los viernes a posts relajados como inauguración del fin de semana en ciernes. Pero esta vez, utilizo este día para subir el link a un post que sí es de carácter técnico, pero que no llevo a un lunes porque ese día de la semana sólo subo contenidos originales míos.

En el caso de la fecha, les invito a descargar un paper en el que se describen muy bien las características de los microscopios modernos. En este caso se refieren al uso de ese instrumento en Microbiología, pero casi todos esos rasgos se comparten con los que usamos en Mineralogía, Petrología y Sedimentología. De allí que les propongo que lo lean como información básica, y ya habrá tiempo para ver similitudes y diferencias, a través de mis propios contenidos.

El link es de la red Academia.edu, pero como la suscripción básica es gratuita, todos pueden acceder al trabajo.

Cada 7 de julio se conmemora el Día Mundial de la Conservación del Suelo, en homenaje al conservacionista estadounidense Hugh Hammond Bennet, que falleció en esa fecha en 1960. Como un reconocimiento a sus esfuerzos en la protección del suelo, fue instituida la fecha, en 1963.

Su trabajo se desarrolló en una época en que no existía conciencia alguna de la fragilidad del recurso suelo, es decir en la década del 30, cuando la falsa creencia de que se trataba de un bien inagotable, condujo a una explotación tan inadecuada que en todo el mundo se perdieron millones de hectáreas de suelos fértiles, que se transformaron en desiertos, o cuya productividad se redujo de manera extrema.

Es por eso que puede considerarse a H.H. Bennet como un verdadero pionero en el tema.

Centennial Celebration and Congress of the International Union of Soil Sciences

Abstract: The custodian of soil science will celebrate its centennial contribute to the nature and human wellbeing in 2024. The event will also empower the linkages with different disciplines, policy makers, stakeholders, institutions, and associations to effectively address civil society needs within agriculture, forestry, environment, urban planning, energy, education, and other societal issues. The celebration will occur on May 19th and will be followed by two intense days of congress, with plenary and parallel scientific sessions. Both soil scientists and specialists from other disciplines will participate to each session, focusing on past achievements and future challenges. The congress will be followed by technical/scientific excursions that will range from short local to long trips, spanning from Alps to Sicily.

A pre-congress visit to Villa Lubin in Rome, the historical place where the IUSS was founded, is scheduled on May 18th. Event website
